With six wins out of six competitions, Colin McRae and Derek Ringer dominated the 1992 RACMSA British Rally Championship in the J314 PWL-registered car. Colin McRae's name still resonates strongly in the motorsport world today. After all, young Colin became the Scottish motocross champion at the age of 13, won the Scottish rally title in 1988, and secured the British championship in 1991 and 1992. In 1995, Colin became the first Brit and youngest driver to clinch the WRC World Championship title, a record that stood unbroken for 27 years. His success continued with 25 WRC race victories, a third-place finish at Le Mans in the GTS class, triumph in the Baja 500 Portalegre, stage wins at Dakar, and numerous other rallies worldwide. When Colin McRae sped down the track, everyone took a step back.
In 1991, Colin turned pro, and Prodrive's director, David Richards CBE, signed him to join the Subaru team in the British rally championship. For the following season, Prodrive built him a new car, the Subaru Legacy RS, equipped with a turbocharged 2.0-liter boxer engine. The Legacy RS met all the requirements for Group A classification. Boasting 350 horsepower, a 6-speed manual gearbox, and Prodrive's four-wheel-drive system, it proved invincible on the track. Thanks to the generous sponsor Rothmans, an iconic blue and white livery was born, recognized by motorsport enthusiasts worldwide. In the 1992 season, McRae and Ringer secured all victories, leaving no room for their competitors.
This legendary racing car underwent restoration about 15 years ago and has seen limited use since. Attention to detail during restoration ensured the car appears exactly as it did during the victorious 1992 season, achieved with incredible precision. The Subaru Legacy RS is simply stunning from every angle, complete with the iconic Rothmans livery in its original evocative colors. The vehicle is fully functional and complete, although it's not ready for intense racing action due to outdated safety features like seats and belts.
Ian Gwynne from BGM Sport in Brackley meticulously inspected and confirmed its impeccable condition. Ian will keep the Legacy RS until its new owner is found on August 25th.
